Annual Kite Flying Competition on Easter “egg hunting” Monday

Finally after eight years on the island, unbelievably as well, my family had the chance to take part on the annual kite flying festival.

I was afraid that it was just going to be pure kite flying. I was in for a surprise when they had games for the kids AND Easter egg hunting!!! I think I was more excited on the idea than that of my son, teehee… We even had the chance to get an annual kite flying tee for the little big boss!

Apart from the egg hunting, kids were also treated to egg decorating, catch the egg, bubble making, and a whole lot more games for the bigger kids (ages 6 and up).

I commend the organizers for the egg hunting. They were safety conscious as they made sure the little ones are not run over by the bigger kids by segregating the kids by age group. They also made sure that the little ones will be able to enjoy the egg hunt by allowing the toddler batch to do the egg hunting way ahead of the older kids (thus, we got 4 eggs!!!). Although I did not like that some of the moms were the ones picking up the eggs instead of their kids – this is unfair because some of the kids didn’t have any egg in their basket. Another thing I liked about this is the fact that there are prices inside the egg, plus, there are special gift prices depending on the amount of eggs you got!

After the egg hunting, mom and kids were instructed to proceed to one hut for some games and activities while waiting for the kite flying competition.

Now the kite flying, this is a competition of handmade kites, that featured the original sack kite (big and small) of the Turks and Caicos Islands. Prizes were also given to the smallest, the biggest and the most creative kite.

In my opinion, the following areas could be improved:

1.) Promotion of the festival – It would be nice if locals and tourists alike share the festivities as they have shared the Fish Fry (only family, relatives and friends of the kite flyers are the ones present on the competition).

2.) A better sound system. – Spectators don’t know what is happening unless you are close to the sound system.

3.) More organized registration and program proper.

4.) Kiosks or food stalls – We are always prepared when it comes to bringing in water and food for the little one; however, it would be better if we, the parents and spectators, will also be able to enjoy good food while enjoying the celebration.

5.) Presence of festival marshals – Spectators are just scattered everywhere increasing risk for accidents. And even if the hosts are reminding guests to move, no one can hear them audibly.

If you happen to be on the island and would like to partake on this annual competition, please do so and show your creativity and the kid in you.

So, ’til the next festival!
